2008 meet 2001

Today I stumbled upon a post I made to back in November 2001. A quick background setup: I lost my job in a small startup around Oct 2001, one month after 9/11 and our economy deep in the throes of the Web Bubble 1.0. I was fortunate enough to find a job then within a month, and I wrote a little entry for other fellow engineers on how to survive the job crunch back then.

Well here we are today, end of 2008: we're in a MUCH deeper economic shithole, and I also just lost my job! Fortunately this time around I have enough of a financial cushion to take a month or two off two spend with family and reinvent myself before I start job hunting again. However the message I wrote back then still rings true for me now, and I hope this will help out fellow unemployed folks. Anyways here's the post.

Visio Skillz

Since I'm on a corporate sabbatical, I figure I still need to keep my Visio skillz sharp so I can spin up cool markitecture diagrams for my next gig. I have been constructing many convoluted data pipes that stitch together my Social Media ecosystem, I figure why not diagram it? Here it is, using a cool web-based diagram tool: AutoDesk DRAW.

  • Yelp, Flickr, Youtube and Delicious are my main "producer endpoints", where I spend most of my time on the Social Web posting restaurant reviews, photos, videos and links. You can also think of these as the most upstream starting points of my social data graph. (I also use Picasa, Vimeo, etc.., but not as frequent)
  • Facebook, Twitter and Friendfeed are my 3 main data pipeline backbone, where my produced data flow into, and there are good reasons for each existance:
  • Friendfeed is my alpha-geekville network. This is where the early adopters are these days. Most of the conversations I participate in on FF involve: VIM vs IntelliJ, massive data computation on hadoop/pig, Adobe AIR vs Silverlight vs Google Desktop. Conversations here are the most "unfiltered" in my social sphere, and participation requires high level of technical acumen.
  • Twitter is my ex-early-adopter network. This place hit critical mass in 2008 with Obama/McCain Election and Live Citizen Journal of Mumbai attacks and China Earthquakes. I also call Twitter the "iPhone Crowd" or the "Adobe AIR" crowd, as there are no less than 3-4 iPhone and AIR desktop clients for twitter. Once FF has at least one iphone and desktop client, it will have reached the same almost-mainstream status of Twitter
  • Facebook is the core of my social network - this is where 99% of my non-technical acquaintances reside, and hence where I have the majority of my chats on Christmas photos, local restaurant reviews, failblog posts, etc... FB is currently a social PHENOMENON, growing at a clip of 600K users a DAY! FB is what Social Network is to the majority of web users, as they move away from the deteriorating Friendsters and MySpaces. HOWEVER, there is a significant backlash from the alpha/beta-geek crowd against FB, because it is a "walled garden". You can see this effect on my graph - many arrows flow in, no arrows flow out. Unless Facebook Connect really takes off, I predict the close-data nature of FB will spell its eventual doom.
  • Another reason why do I have 3 data backbone: BCP my friend! Seven years of working in the largest internet company in the world has taught me that redundancy and failover rules - and that I must create redundant data flows and backbones in my own social data graph. Twitter is prone to Fail Whale, hence I can switch to FF or even FB directly to update my status when its down. I also have my data replicated across numerous stores - i.e. data redundancy. This is good for SAAS and Cloud Computing, and it's good for my personal data!
  • I consider LinkedIn my "professional" network, though personal and professional data and networking is becoming more and more blurred in my world. Plaxo - I'm still trying to figure out what to do with this network, right now it's being minimally maintained. Finally I also register data reception on Spock, Rapleaf, and a few other niche sites. Just to explore what's out there.
  • My nascent blog "Anybody want a peanut": I'm also cultivating to be an important data hub. Because of the unstructured nature of blogger platform (I can pretty much add any html/javascript/flash code I want), there's a lot of potential, expandability and CONTROL to this site.

Technology makes me lazy

See my twitter stream on the right? Yeah I tweet a lot, maybe 4-5 tweets a day. So I thinkst to meself: is there a way to create daily blog entry of these tweets? Did a quick web search, voila: LoudTwitter! So starting today, you'll see my daily twitter aggregate entry. I'll still write a few blogs manually every now and then to encapsulate longer thoughts. But again, thank you technology-bot!

New Chapter

On 12/9/2009, I was part of the 1500 layed off by Yahoo! This ends my 7 year tenure at, Overture, and then Yahoo. But don't cry for me, Argentina! I relish the opportunity Y! has given me to start anew, but first with a personal sabbatical where I can reinvent myself. So here we got, top 10 list of things Gene will do differently during my period of unemployment. Will start with 5 for now, continue in future post:

  1. Start a blog! (tada) But more importantly, maintain it! My first blog was on, lasted about 2 entries. My second blog was on facebook blog app, lasted 4. Now I just have to beat 8, and I'm accomplished geometric progression! :-)
  2. More quality time with the family. As Don Coleon put it eloquently: A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man.
  3. Get an iPhone. Yeah I'm behind the curve. It's time to catch up to the gadget age. Will even try to create an app or two and become independently wealthy.
  4. Run a mile in less than 6 minutes. Bench press 300 lbs. I've never accomplished the former before (personal best was like 7 min 20 sec, yeah horrendous), and my all-time bench max was 325 back in '99.
  5. Create a 5 year personal game plan.
To be continued...
