Facebook and Math

I love math and I love social networks. Hence this great blog post, Is Canada Facebook-saturated, really gives me the goosebumps! Reminds me of acid-base titration curves and rabbit-fox population growth curves back in my biochem days. Or my freshmen year dorm life, where my mechanical engineer roommate and I would play drink games like solve each other's 2nd order differential equations.

25 Random Things About Me - Non-Facebook Edition

Yeah I'm a lemming and wrote up one of 'em 25 Things in Facebook. Since FB is still a walled garden, I am posting it in my blog as well.

1. My first computer was a Commodore 64 which my dad bought for me in '81, when I was 7 yrs old and just after we moved from Taiwan to the States. I quickly picked up BASIC programming, so I can say I learned BASIC language before the English language.

2. Back in highschool I had a 36" vert. However I also have stumpy arms and legs and a long torso. Hence I sucked in basketball (never made the team), but did well in high jump (jr varsity track team). My personal best was clearing 5'10" when I was 5'9" tall.

3. My most memorable moment in highschool was Academic Decathlon. It taught me how to learn, teamwork, and all-around geek-ery. Latin and JCL competition came a close second.

4. I was a skinny geek through highschool, so started weightlifting in college (so I can be a buff geek ;-)) At my physical peak in '01, I could bench press 325lb, 3 reps. Now about 250lb

5. I fear gaps of great distance, like the Grand Canyon. Whenever I see one, I visualize it in grid format, like the old arcade game Marble Madness. I think there's a scientific name for this strange fear, it's grid-a-gap-o-phobia.

6. My favorite place as a kid was Chuck-e-Cheese. My favorite arcade game there was Kangeroo.

7. I regret bullying on my sister when we were young. I try to make it up by making sure Nat doesn't bully on Luke, as much ;-)

8. My favorite thing at McDonalds was their old apple pie (you know, the deep fried ones). The current baked ones suck. I curse the person who sued McDonalds over the old apple pie hot filling to this very day.

9. I have little in common with my wife. She is OCD, I am a messy unorganized slob; She's an English major, I'm Biochemistry. She is temperamental and emotional, I am more even-keeled and Spock-like. This is why we have been happily together for 15 years now.

10. One thing we do have in common is we both love to eat. Our favorite restaurant is Jozu on Melrose near La Cienega. We both cried when it shut down a while back.

11. I have almost no body hair, even for an Asian. My wife gets extremely jealous.

12. I had a favorite blanket up until I was in my early teens. It got so tattered from wash that my mom threw it away. This is one thing I will never forgive her for!

13. My grandparents are traditional farmers in Taiwan. Since I'm the oldest son of the oldest son, I stand to inherit a few acres of bamboo farmland when they pass away. If my current career fails, I have a fallback!
14. I am Taiwanese, but cannot speak Taiwanese. But that's ok, farmers don't need to communicate much.

15. I'm a Laker fan since '82. My family used to live near The Fabulous Forum, and I would bike there with my friends and pay $10 student ticket to watch Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jamal Wilkes, and Coooop. This is for Chick: This game is in the fridge: The door is closed, the lights are out, eggs are cool, butter is getting hard, and the Jell-o is jigglin'!

16. My wife may have different reason, but we named Natalie because Star Wars I just came out, and we named Brandon because I love Marlon Brando.

17. I can recite the entire movie of The Princess Bride. Few people enjoy watching it with me, excepts those who can also recite the whole movie.

18. The back of my head is concave, that is I have an occipital cavity instead of protuberance. I would have been a friggen' genius if my brain had more room to grow.

19. I have participated in one riot so far in my lifetime: the great Westwood Riot of '94 when UCLA Basketball took it all the way. I was an active participant in turning over a KISS FM van and taking a few promo stickers.

20. My 4 years at UCLA are some of the best years of my life. Helps that I met my future wife there as well.

21. I was originally pre-med, had a decent biochem major GPA and got a MCAT of 39 (decent score, out of 45). But didn't make it past any med school interviews. I guess my anti-social behaviors made me a perfect software engineer. Plus 2 doctors in the family would make boring bedtime conversation.

22. Both my wife and I have large heads compared to body. Hence our kids are doomed to be lollipops.

23. My favorite place on Earth is Bora Bora, where we went for honeymoon. Since it's prohibitively expensive, I settle with going to Hawaii twice a year instead.

24. I got my bushy eyebrows from my grandfather. My wife wants them plucked, I run away from sight of any tweezer.

25. My favorite color is red.

F' the tagging, we all get enough spam on FB as it is!
